ELIZA DOOLITTLE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM IN THE U.S
London-born songstress Eliza Doolittle, who’s already thrilling fans across the Atlantic with her breezy singles “Skinny Genes” and “Pack Up,” will release her self-titled debut album early next year on Capitol Records. In the September issue of Nylon, Doolittle’s first U.S. magazine profile, the magazine calls out her “sassy lyrics, jaunty melodies” and raves that “her songs capture the feeling of being young, happy, and carefree.”
22-year-old Doolittle has been writing songs since she was 12 and signed a publishing deal at 16.

Merch Table Essentials: 15 Ways For Musicians To Increase Sales, Fans and Efficiency - MTT - Music Think Tank
As album sales are becoming a less meaningful component in the overall success of an artist or band, the live performance sector, including ticket sales and merchandise sales, is becoming increasingly important. While the live show itself must be unique in order to encourage repeat customers and ultimately drive ticket sales, the merchandise table has the opportunity to drive significant revenue and first hand, artist-fan engagement. But just having a merch table is not enough, as there are essential elements that must be accounted for in order to make the effort worth while.
Assuming that you have accounted for the typical ‘guts’, such as T-Shirts, CDs, Hats, Stickers, etc. there are essentials to any effective merch table that will do three very important thing:
- Increase your sales- Increase your long-term engagement with new and existing fans- Decrease wasteful overhead when investing in the merch for your next tour

Google & Verizon's Version Of Net Neutrality Offers Little Protection For Music Industry Innovation - hypebot
The joint Google and Verizon agreement does promise equal access to the current internet and proposes punishment for ISPs that restrict or "throttle" certain services. But the pair would also create a "fast lane" for premium content - presumably paid services that require heavy bandwidth. The proposal seems reasonable - YouTube, email and everything we're used to continues unrestricted without being bogged down - until you remember that not long ago YouTube itself was considered a bandwidth hog.

Last night Kanye West invited some of his best suit-owning friends to a private party at the Lower East Side cabaret club The Box for a jam session with John Legend, according to Sound of the City. Along with playing some stripped-down versions of hits including "Power", "Good Life", and "American Boy" (with Estelle), he debuted the winningly Oedipal new track "Mama's Boyfriend" (which he previewed a cappella at Facebook headquarters a few weeks back).

Does Rihanna Need Her Own Sasha Fierce? » MTV Newsroom
Ever since Rihanna has hit the music scene, she has dominated. She has an extensive fan base, and seems almost as powerful as Ms. Beyonce herself (we said almost). However, according to this MTV article, Rihanna could use a little of Beyonce's alter ego Sasha Fierce.
Check out the article here: Does Rihanna Need Her Own Sasha Fierce? » MTV Newsroom
Yes, there were a stream of flashes of the performer the 22-year-old is on the verge of becoming: A playful, capable drum solo that ended with Ri tossing her sticks into the crowd; a masterful medley that included hooks from "Love the Way You Lie" and B.o.B's "Airplanes" and segued into Sheila E.'s '80s hit "The Glamorous Life."
But there was also a sense that her screaming fans weren't connecting as much to her as they were to the hits, frequently joining her on the lyrics without being provoked. And that was mostly because Rihanna held back when it came to banter, save for the moments between numbers when she shouted-out the Empire City. No "Unplugged"-like intros to the songs, no sing-along requests to the fans in the rafters, not even a "How y'all doin' tonight?" test of the temperature.

Top Seven Reasons Why Artists Strongly Resist Social Media | Ariel Publicity
Strongly recommend this article for musicians who are unsure of social media. It can be overwhelming and take time, but the payoffs can be huge, especially for those who are self-promoting.

#6. Status Updates on Facebook and Twitter Tweets are stupid. Who CARES about what everyone is DOING ALL OF THE TIME???
Many artists only feel that social networking sites are made for promotional use.
And when we all came to the party with the first ever social network – MySpace – that was indeed the case. In fact the GOAL was: Hype, hype, hype. Promote. And add, add, add as many friends as possible. Rack up the plays by any means necessary. Or you wouldn’t get that club to pay attention to you or that record label to sign you!
There were no personal thoughts or “status updates” in the mix whatsoever.
Therefore, a lot of artists become deathly afraid of Twitter and Facebook status updates because they don’t feel that people want to know their random or personal thoughts.
Since Twitter counteracts that and is more of a community-building tool than a promotional tool, it confuses them on what they are supposed to be doing or saying on it.
Get everyone in your group involved! Maybe one person flourishes on Twitter but doesn’t understand Facebook. Then let them put 100% of their energy into that social networking site alone. You will see when someone is actually doing something they understand you will get the best return on your investment on that site.

Shuffler: Turn Music Blogs Into Streaming Stations - hypebot
Next Tuesday, a new crowdsourced music service is launching called Shuffler; it takes blog content and turns the songs into streaming radio stations. Also, the service queues-up the most-recently listed music first and it displays the entire post of origin below the playback controls. As compared to other sites, those that make a song's origins nearly invisible to users, this should make bloggers happy.

Why are so many old folks still so cool?
Why are so many old folks still cool? My prediction is that the music industry has gotten so big that all they can produce are packaged hits. The recipe for success seems to be: take one young teen (doesn't necessarily have to be talented, just young and good looking), build a brand around said teen. When teen hits 16-17, encourage "branching out" and "rebelling against innocent image". Follow teen as they self destruct. It's boring, it's old and it has completely shifted the focus from musicians out there who actually care, who are actually breaking ground to packaged recipes. Sorry Miley, your little breaking free from the bird cage video has been done so many times before. It is not as shocking as you want it to be.
Here is the Los Angeles Times take on why old folks are still so cool:
Todays showbiz puzzler: Why are so many old folks still so cool? | The Big Picture | Los Angeles Times
Here is the Los Angeles Times take on why old folks are still so cool:
"I think they earn their street cred for doing something well for so long that we realize that their gifts come from the inside, not just from being in fashion or having a sexy body. The next time anyone in Hollywood wants Nicholson for one of those "Bucket List"-style crazy old coots comedies, they should give Buddy Guy a call. He's got great comic chops, tons of charisma and energy to burn. Seeing him effortlessly work the crowd last night was a heady reminder that age really is just a state of mind. I have to admit--people like Guy and Eastwood make growing old look awfully enticing."

Audio: Burnt Ones “Kaleidoscope Eyes”
“Kaleidoscope Eyes” opens with looping wave of Mark Tester’s hazy, distorted guitar before he steps up to the mic and adds with his echoed vocals. The song appears on the San Francisco-based trio’s new release, Black Teeth and Golden Tongues: “a self-produced, 11-song trip through wall of sound séances and blissed out rock ‘n’ roll, with doses of psych, sun, spit and girl group worship.”

J. Roddy Walston and The Business, like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting a 70′s glam rock band. [Album Review] — HearYa - Indie Music Blog

J. Roddy Walston and The Business – Don’t Break The Needle
J. Roddy Walston and The Business, like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting a 70′s glam rock band. [Album Review] — HearYa - Indie Music Blog
I wanted to catch the Futurebirds set on an outside stage at the 40 Watt Party. On our way out, the Futurebirds’ manager, Jay Steele, told us to catch a set by some dude in the parking lot and guaranteed we’d love it. Dreaming of warmer climates and jealous of Jay’s Patagonia fleece, I didn’t even pay attention to the name of the band.
J. Roddy Walston and The Business and they won two new fans in Oz and myself. The self-titled new album, released conveniently during Chicago’s summer party days, lives up to that 20 minutes in Austin. The quartet delivers a sound like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting a 70′s glam rock band.

This Is an Album. This Is an Album With Synchronized Lyrics & Artwork... - Digital Music News
The beauty of audio is that it can drift into the background - during sleep, a workout, or a drive. But lean-forward experiences are also important, and Arcade Fire recently cooked an impressive iTunes synchronization involving artwork, lyrics, and other related media.
Superfans are probably already experiencing this, though the concept essentially repurposes a feature already in place for iTunes podcasts. Hatched with the help of Vincent Morrisset and Topspin, the concept keeps the fan engaged with streams of related content, included web pages and images. "You can spend hours upon hours listening, reading, clicking around — it's an incredible way to experience the album," Topspin topper Ian Rogers described. "Such beautiful music and lyrics coupled with simple yet creative technical presentation."

Google and the Music Industry
http://www.amsrabbit.comhttp://www.amsrabbit.comGoogle made a couple of announcements in relation to the music industry at the Google's I/O developer conference. "Google's most direct foray into music comes via the announcement that it had purchased Simplify Media two months ago, and will incorporating its technology in a new version of Android that enables users to stream music directly from their home PCs. That's a very different approach than MP3Tunes, Spotify or Apple's soon to be defunct Lala and others who have focused on storing music in the cloud.
Just as importantly Google announced that a new upgrade for Android will enable over the air downloads and auto-synch to all Android powered devices. No word yet, it Google is opening its own music store or just opening it's system to Amazon and others. Either way, its direct challenge to iTunes."

More About Live Nation Losses
(Updated) Losses grew at Live Nation last quarter as the company absorbed the cost of its January 25th merger with Ticketmaster, a drastic drop in income from Tickets Now and faltering concert attendance.
The company claims that the merger will eventually save $40 million in redundant costs. But that won't help much if ticket sales continue to fall. Last year they dropped 3% to 6.8 million from 7.1 million in the previous year while total spending per concert goer grew 2% to $59.71 from $58.57.

Black Eyed Peas has Best Selling Digital Download of All Times
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Make the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" the Best-Selling Digital Download of All Time
5,561,000 million, to be exact. That gives the Black Eyed Peas #1 and #4 ("Boom Boom Pow," 5,298,000) on the all time digital sales list--which has been around since July of 2003--reports Billboard. For context, there were roughly 252,908,000 internet users in America, total, circa 2009. Though it's probably safe to assume that Europeans did a lot of the work in this case.

Volcano Forces Coachella Cancellations
How does a volcano in Iceland impact Coachella in California?
As you've probably heard, volcanic ash from a series of eruptions under Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull glacier has been spreading across European airspace for the past two days, forcing European airports to cancel a huge number of flights. That's bad news for many of the Euro bands booked for Coachella and for the fans hoping to see them.
At the moment, the list of bands who won't make it out to the festival includes the Cribs, Frightened Rabbit, and, according to The New York Times, Bad Lieutenant. UPDATE: According to the Coachella Twitter, Delphic have canceled as well.
On the Cribs' MySpace page, the band say they're "gutted" and that they won't make it "despite a Herculean effort". Frightened Rabbit, meanwhile, posted on their Twitter that a Coachella appearance is "unlikely... unless they allow us to headline Sunday night. In other words, no."
Gary Numan, booked for a Sunday set, wrote on his website that he might be able to make it to Coachella thanks to a late Sunday flight: "if we are very lucky, we might just make it to the festival site (a three hour plus drive from Los Angeles) in time for our slot but without a single second of rehearsal with Robin Finck, the American based guitar player for the US shows, who has never played with us before." The Times also lists Delphic as a question mark.

State Internet Tax
As a result of the economic crisis our country is facing states are in the process of imposing taxes on digital downloads, including music and videos. Given the current state of the music industry the last thing we need is a price increase of 3% to 5% on our music, let them tax tobacco and other sins instead. Any price increases on music should be paid to the creators of music and those that invest in that creation, not the government. Please go to the below website and sign, and have your artists sign, the website petition. Any questions, let us know.

Study Finds U.S. Users are More Likely to Listen to Web-Only Radio
Vision Critical’s new three-country radio study finds a vast difference in the way US consumers with a smartphone are listening to radio, compared to their Canadian and British counterparts.
Interactive research and technology firm Vision Critical surveyed more than 3,000 adults in the US, UK and Canada and found that while those in Canada and the UK are using applications on their smartphone or iPod Touch to listen to AM/FM radio, US users are more likely to use their apps to listen to web-only radio and music streaming services. Among adults in the US who have listened to online-only radio in the past month, Pandora leads the pack as the favored online music service (42% having listened in the past year), followed by Rhapsody (6%), last.fm (5%) and Yahoo! (5%). The findings come from Vision Critical’s “Radio Futures 2010” study, conducted in February and March of this year. Further survey results will be shared at next Monday’s RAIN Summit West conference in Las Vegas.

Justin Bieber Tops Billboard 200 With 'My World 2.0'
From Billboard News
Justin Bieber debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with "My World 2.0," after shifting 283,000 copies in its first week. It's the teenager's second album and first No. 1. His first set, "My World," debuted at No. 6 upon its release last November. This week it rises to a new peak, scooting from No. 10 to No. 5 with 50,000 (up 50%).
At 16-years old, Bieber is the youngest solo male artist to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Aug. 24, 1963, when the then-13-year old Stevie Wonder spent one week at No. 1 with "Little Stevie Wonder/The 12 Year Old Genius." (Wonder recorded the album when he was 12, but released it after turning 13.) "My World 2.0's" opening frame is also Bieber's best sales week, surpassing his previous high, when the first "My World" sold 157,000 copies over Christmas week of 2009.
Thus, with albums at Nos. 1 and 5, Bieber is the first act to concurrently chart two albums within the top five of the Billboard 200 since the chart dated Oct. 9, 2004. That's when Nelly ranked at Nos. 2 and 4 with "Suit" and "Sweat," respectively. Nelly had bowed the simultaneously-released albums at Nos. 1 and 2 on the previous week's chart. The last time an act placed two albums in the top five that weren't concurrently released was on May 3, 2003. That week 50 Cent's first two major label releases -- "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" and the CD/DVD combo "The New Breed" were at Nos. 5 and 2, respectively.
Coming in at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 is Monica with "Still Standing," selling 184,000 copies. It's the singer's second-highest sales week and charting album, surpassed only by the 186,000 that "After the Storm" earned when it started at No. 1 way back in 2003. Last week Monica claimed her first No. 1 single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in almost seven years as "Everything to Me" climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 on the tally. The tune -- which samples Deniece Williams' "Silly," a No. 11 R&B hit for the singer in 1981 -- is Monica's sixth No. 1 overall on the R&B chart.
The continuing saga of the "Now That's What I Call Music!" series extends its Billboard 200 chart dominance this week as the 33rd volume arrives at No. 3 with 135,000. The 21-track collection features Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles like Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" and Owl City's "Fireflies" and top 10 hits like Rihanna's "Hard" and Train's "Hey, Soul Sister." And with the "Now" franchise's latest spin-off, the Christian-leaning "Now That's What I Call Faith" debuting at No. 143, the "Now" brand has racked up an impressive 56 charting albums since it launched in 1998.
The final new arrival in the top 10 this week belongs to She & Him with its second album, fittingly titled "Volume Two." It starts at No. 6 with 47,000. That trumps the peak and best sales week of the duo's first set, "Volume One," which topped out at No. 71. (Its best sales frame -- 10,000 -- came a week earlier when it debuted on the list at No. 81.)
Last week's No. 1, Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," slips to No. 4 with 78,000 (down 16%) while Ludacris' "Battle of the Sexes" falls four slots to No. 7 with 45,000 (down 27%). Lady Gaga's "The Fame" slides three rungs to No. 8 with 41,000 (down 15%), Marvin Sapp's "Here I Am" drops seven spots to No. 9 with 39,000 (down 48%) and the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." moves down two positions to No. 10 with 34,000 (down 11%).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending March 28) totaled 6.03 million units, up 6.5% compared to the sum last week (5.66 million) and down 11% compared to the comparable sales week of 2009 (6.77 million).

25 Ways to Overcome Creative Block
Creative block can happen to the most dynamic musician! Scott Hansen from ISO50 has gathered ideas from 25 creative professionals across the industry to share how they get over their creative blocks. The advice is applicable any creative medium.
We found great inspiration from “Dress Code” designers who do the following to get their creative juices flowing:
“D: During the micro day to day stuff if I am in a creative rut I surf the web, go for a walk, check out a movie, shop for books, go to a museum or do other largely cliche things to fill up my brain with inspiration. Sometimes though I get sick of looking to other sources and try to clear my head by just getting out of the office and ideas come when I least expect them.
A: When it comes to daily creativity, I try to break down all of my tasks in a rough schedule everyday. I work on projects from 2-3 hour chunks at a time. I do not spend an entire day on one project alone unless its absolutely necessary. I turn off email and IM or check it every hour on the hour. Breaking down time helps me because when I have 2 hours to complete a task I’m solely focused on elements or details that might otherwise been overlooked. I think it makes me more creative because I look forward the next time I will get to work on a project and forces me to take some time off and think about what I will do next time. The schedule also helps me shift gears between different mediums. Multi-tasking doesn’t work for me, I can’t be having an IM conversation while writing a contract while talking to an intern while waiting for an email while trying to design something too. Getting rid of those small distractions and focusing on a single project helps.
D: The way our studio is set up though we try to have some overlap in who works on what, so there isn’t a ton of pressure on any one person to carry all of the creative weight, which can be kind of daunting and lets us be a bit more free with things.
D: But for the larger macro in a rut stuff we try to keep moving our business in new directions so we can stay happy creatively. To do self initiated work that balances out the day to day client stuff but in the end comes back and informs it.
A: On a macro scale, creativity comes and goes for me. I can’t predict when I will be excited about a project. I just try to be happy in my personal life which in turn makes me productive at work. And being productive at work also makes me happy in my personal life. So I try to do as many things that make me happy: playing soccer, reading books, playing video games, hanging with my lady, getting drunk, whatever I’m in the mood for. I find it tough to be creative when I’m worried or angry at something.
D: Also we work a lot of different mediums which helps keep things fresh, since one day we can be doing motion and the next a tee shirt or a branding project.
D: Teaching helps too because it exposes us to up and coming talent and fresh ideas every week. We are learning from them just as much as they are from us.”

D: Also we work a lot of different mediums which helps keep things fresh, since one day we can be doing motion and the next a tee shirt or a branding project.
D: Teaching helps too because it exposes us to up and coming talent and fresh ideas every week. We are learning from them just as much as they are from us.”

2009 Album Cover Trends
Design Trend: Portraits
Portrait photography is great direction to head in for solo artists; however it has never been a big thing for bands and groups. The portrait helps customers put a face to the name, making them more aware of the artists, their songs, and their latest album (probably the one they're looking at!). Portraits in album artwork always tend to be close-up macro shots, usually of the artists face; this completely fills the area, meaning the customer/viewer is focusing their full attention on the artist.Design Trend: Photo Manipulations
Photo Manipulations are a great way to make an album pop out - it suggests the type of music the artist or band produce, and if done well can generally increase sales.Design Trend: Grunge
Just like other graphic design projects and web design, grunge is a great way to add depth and interest to album artworks. Although it is more commonly used by bands, it works just as well for solo artists; however it does, in the end, all come down to the genre of music the band or artist produces.Design Trend: Image-Based
A powerful photograph could be all it takes to increase an albums amount of sales. Scroll down and you'll find a couple that are strong enough to cope as a cover without any use of typography whatsoever!Design Trend: Type-Based
Just like the image-based album trend, powerful typography can sometimes be enough all by itself. It works in the exact same way a typography based web design or poster works!Design Trend: Black and White
Black and White images are often linked with these two words: 'Elegant' and 'Beautiful'. In the case of album artwork, that is quite often the case!Design Trend: Minimalistic
Minimalistic covers, in most cases, are cheaper to produce. They sometimes work really well, and others not so well. This year we have seen quite a few minimal album covers, both good and bad.Design Trend: Digital
Digital artwork is a great way to aim artwork at a younger, more modern generation. It's a great way to increase sales if the album is aimed at a particular market.Design Trend: Hand-Drawn
Hand-drawn is one of the biggest design trends of the year; not only in album artwork but in web design and other graphic design projects, too. We've seen it everywhere in the web especially, from complete hand-drawn designs, to hand-drawn rss and social media icons and even just the odd hand-drawn note.Design Trend: Vector Art
We all love vector art; it's clean, elegant and the amount of effects are completely endless. No two things are ever the same!
