Google & Verizon's Version Of Net Neutrality Offers Little Protection For Music Industry Innovation - hypebot

The joint Google and Verizon agreement does promise equal access to the current internet and proposes punishment for ISPs that restrict or "throttle" certain services. But the pair would also create a "fast lane" for premium content - presumably paid services that require heavy bandwidth. The proposal seems reasonable - YouTube, email and everything we're used to continues unrestricted without being bogged down - until you remember that not long ago YouTube itself was considered a bandwidth hog.

Watch: Kanye Debuts New Song Live

Last night Kanye West invited some of his best suit-owning friends to a private party at the Lower East Side cabaret club The Box for a jam session with John Legend, according to Sound of the City. Along with playing some stripped-down versions of hits including "Power", "Good Life", and "American Boy" (with Estelle), he debuted the winningly Oedipal new track "Mama's Boyfriend" (which he previewed a cappella at Facebook headquarters a few weeks back).

Does Rihanna Need Her Own Sasha Fierce? » MTV Newsroom

Ever since Rihanna has hit the music scene, she has dominated. She has an extensive fan base, and seems almost as powerful as Ms. Beyonce herself (we said almost). However, according to this MTV article, Rihanna could use a little of Beyonce's alter ego Sasha Fierce.

Yes, there were a stream of flashes of the performer the 22-year-old is on the verge of becoming: A playful, capable drum solo that ended with Ri tossing her sticks into the crowd; a masterful medley that included hooks from "Love the Way You Lie" and B.o.B's "Airplanes" and segued into Sheila E.'s '80s hit "The Glamorous Life."

But there was also a sense that her screaming fans weren't connecting as much to her as they were to the hits, frequently joining her on the lyrics without being provoked. And that was mostly because Rihanna held back when it came to banter, save for the moments between numbers when she shouted-out the Empire City. No "Unplugged"-like intros to the songs, no sing-along requests to the fans in the rafters, not even a "How y'all doin' tonight?" test of the temperature.

Top Seven Reasons Why Artists Strongly Resist Social Media | Ariel Publicity

Strongly recommend this article for musicians who are unsure of social media. It can be overwhelming and take time, but the payoffs can be huge, especially for those who are self-promoting.

#6. Status Updates on Facebook and Twitter Tweets are stupid. Who CARES about what everyone is DOING ALL OF THE TIME???

Many artists only feel that social networking sites are made for promotional use.

And when we all came to the party with the first ever social network – MySpace – that was indeed the case. In fact the GOAL was: Hype, hype, hype. Promote. And add, add, add as many friends as possible. Rack up the plays by any means necessary. Or you wouldn’t get that club to pay attention to you or that record label to sign you!

There were no personal thoughts or “status updates” in the mix whatsoever.

Therefore, a lot of artists become deathly afraid of Twitter and Facebook status updates because they don’t feel that people want to know their random or personal thoughts.

Since Twitter counteracts that and is more of a community-building tool than a promotional tool, it confuses them on what they are supposed to be doing or saying on it.

Get everyone in your group involved! Maybe one person flourishes on Twitter but doesn’t understand Facebook. Then let them put 100% of their energy into that social networking site alone. You will see when someone is actually doing something they understand you will get the best return on your investment on that site.

Shuffler: Turn Music Blogs Into Streaming Stations - hypebot

Next Tuesday, a new crowdsourced music service is launching called Shuffler; it takes blog content and turns the songs into streaming radio stations. Also, the service queues-up the most-recently listed music first and it displays the entire post of origin below the playback controls. As compared to other sites, those that make a song's origins nearly invisible to users, this should make bloggers happy.

Why are so many old folks still so cool?

Why are so many old folks still cool? My prediction is that the music industry has gotten so big that all they can produce are packaged hits. The recipe for success seems to be: take one young teen (doesn't necessarily have to be talented, just young and good looking), build a brand around said teen. When teen hits 16-17, encourage "branching out" and "rebelling against innocent image". Follow teen as they self destruct. It's boring, it's old and it has completely shifted the focus from musicians out there who actually care, who are actually breaking ground to packaged recipes. Sorry Miley, your little breaking free from the bird cage video has been done so many times before. It is not as shocking as you want it to be.

Here is the Los Angeles Times take on why old folks are still so cool:

"I think they earn their street cred for doing something well for so long that we realize that their gifts come from the inside, not just from being in fashion or having a sexy body. The next time anyone in Hollywood wants Nicholson for one of those "Bucket List"-style crazy old coots comedies, they should give Buddy Guy a call. He's got great comic chops, tons of charisma and energy to burn. Seeing him effortlessly work the crowd last night was a heady reminder that age really is just a state of mind. I have to admit--people like Guy and Eastwood make growing old look awfully enticing."

Audio: Burnt Ones “Kaleidoscope Eyes”

“Kaleidoscope Eyes” opens with looping wave of Mark Tester’s hazy, distorted guitar before he steps up to the mic and adds with his echoed vocals. The song appears on the San Francisco-based trio’s new release, Black Teeth and Golden Tongues: “a self-produced, 11-song trip through wall of sound séances and blissed out rock ‘n’ roll, with doses of psych, sun, spit and girl group worship.”

J. Roddy Walston and The Business, like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting a 70′s glam rock band. [Album Review] — HearYa - Indie Music Blog

The story of a blogger and his last days at SxSW 2009.

I wanted to catch the Futurebirds set on an outside stage at the 40 Watt Party. On our way out, the Futurebirds’ manager, Jay Steele, told us to catch a set by some dude in the parking lot and guaranteed we’d love it. Dreaming of warmer climates and jealous of Jay’s Patagonia fleece, I didn’t even pay attention to the name of the band.

J. Roddy Walston and The Business and they won two new fans in Oz and myself. The self-titled new album, released conveniently during Chicago’s summer party days, lives up to that 20 minutes in Austin. The quartet delivers a sound like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting a 70′s glam rock band.

This Is an Album. This Is an Album With Synchronized Lyrics & Artwork... - Digital Music News

The beauty of audio is that it can drift into the background - during sleep, a workout, or a drive. But lean-forward experiences are also important, and Arcade Fire recently cooked an impressive iTunes synchronization involving artwork, lyrics, and other related media.

Superfans are probably already experiencing this, though the concept essentially repurposes a feature already in place for iTunes podcasts. Hatched with the help of Vincent Morrisset and Topspin, the concept keeps the fan engaged with streams of related content, included web pages and images. "You can spend hours upon hours listening, reading, clicking around — it's an incredible way to experience the album," Topspin topper Ian Rogers described. "Such beautiful music and lyrics coupled with simple yet creative technical presentation."
